|The City of Kolkata was founded by Job Charnok who came here as an agent of the East India Company in August 1690, 300 years ago, out of 3 villages called Sutanati, Gobindapur and Kalikata. The newly formed city of Calcutta soon became the capital of British India as well as the capital of undivided Bengal and is at present the capital of the state of West Bengal since Independence.
Kolkata stands on the east bank of the river Hooghly.
